Radio silence


The European Space Federation has won another small victory for astronomers in their battle to study weak radio emissions from distant galaxies without interference from communication satellites. The Iridium mobile phone network, which has a flotilla of 66 communication satellites in low Earth orbit, has guaranteed 24-hour radio silence within the range of frequencies between 1621 and 1626 megahertz by 2006.
